View from the Bottom
The View from the Bottom is Mike Millisor's monthly letter to all of the stakeholders of the Breckenridge Grand Vacations family of resorts.
Over the years, many of you have told me that one of the things you like best about Breckenridge is that it is a town, not just a resort. And not even that it is just a town, but a town with a history- and an interesting history at that. I was reminded of that as we approach the town's 5th Annual Kingdom Days celebration this month; and I wondered how many of you know the story behind the mythical "Kingdom of Breckenridge."
While Breck was actually founded in 1859, it happens that in the 1930s, some Breck residents found a map from the 1880s that did not show Breckenridge's existence. It seems it wasn't just one map that omitted Breckenridge, but several, leading to speculation that the town had never been officially annexed to the United States. Some concluded that if it wasn't part of the U.S., it must be its own "kingdom."
None of the rumors about the maps were valid, of course; official maps did include Breckenridge. But the locals made the most of it to draw attention to the town and its attractions. Finally, in 1936 they invited the Governor of Colorado to Breckenridge to raise a flag at the Courthouse, welcoming Breckenridge into the union. The Governor came - I'd like to have met him, as he must have had a great sense of humor - and the town threw a big party. Read more
