Winter winds dry out skin in any climate, but chapped lips and itchy elbows are especially likely at a place like Breckenridge, with its semi-arid climate and high altitude. There are some things you can do, though, to give your skin a break.
- Take shorter showers. The steam may feel good in the short term, but the hot water actually removes skin’s natural oils. When you’re done, pat skin dry instead of rubbing.
- Use a milder, unscented soap. Antibacterial or deodorant soaps also strip oils, and perfumes can irritate sensitive skin.
- Use a moisturizer regularly. It doesn’t have to be expensive; mineral oil and petroleum jelly help hold moisture in as well as many high-priced creams.
- Slather on sunscreen to prevent burning.
- Use lip balm. Lips don’t have oil glands and are especially prone to drying out. And don’t lick them; that only makes it worse.
